Abdurrahman Ali Ahmed Tuur was the first president in the new self-proclaimed independent Republic of Somaliland. He was the chairperson of the Somali National Movement.
The movement was the only Somali movement I knew during the 1980s. I published many reportages, interviews, and articles about Somalia through direct contacts with this movement, which has been one of my journalistic political resources.
Some activists from the Isaaq emigrants in Britain formed the Somali National Movement in 1982 and linked to Somali elements from the same clan in the Gulf States area. Many of them were in Kuwait that time where I was a journalist in Al-Watan newspaper.
The Somali National Movement (SNM) defeated the remaining factions of the military in 1991 and the victory led the movement to think of building Somaliland as a republic to include Haregisia and the surrounding lands at the north of Somalia.
They appointed Abdulrahman Ali Ahmed Tuur president in 28 May 1991, five days after declaring the independence and the fighting continued to control Berbera the Red Sea port.
This might have the turing point that led Abdurrahman Ali Ahmed Tuur to rethink of the state of Somalia, as one land and express his wishes to return to Somalia and work towards building a strong united country.
In addition to the Somali National Movement there were two armed groups named the United Somali Congress (USC) and the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM). Members from the Hawiye clan formed the USC in Rome.
General Mohamed Farah Aideed led this front to enter Mogadishu in 1990, before the final collapse of Siad Barre's regime and succeeded for a couple of years when he controlled many fighting fields.
Colonel Omar Jess defected from the Somali government during the war against the Somali National Movement (SNM) to form the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM) and the movement has the main support from the Ogaden.
The United Somali Congress (USC) has not survived for long and it split to several factions following the fall of Siad Barre. The important factions comprised supporters of Aideed and Ali Mahdi Mohamed. Therefore, Aideed transformed his faction to the Somali National Alliance (SNA).
The Somali National Movement (SNM) formed a kind of alliance with the United Somali Congress (USC) and the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM) in 1989 against the military regime of Siad Barre.
In the Borama Conference 1993, the Somali National Movement dissolved and a civilian government replaced the government of Abdulrahman Ali Ahmed Tuur.
Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur was born in 1931 in an Issaq house and he had been a government official, a Somali diplomat and a chairperson of the Somali National Movement and the President of Somaliland in 1991-1993.
He led the new state of Somaliland before president Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal (Maxamed Xaaji Ibraahim Cigaal). But, sone sources say he was not the first president of Somaliland.
In a desperate move to reconnect with the rest of the divided country, Abderrahman Ahmed Ali Tuur and some of his followers publicly attempted towards reconciliation, called for the return to Somalia in 1994 under a federal system and supported the UNOSOM peace-building mission.
That attempt alienated Abdiraxmaan Axmed Ali Tuur and most former followers from the succeeding government. So, Abdurrahman Ali Ahmed Tuur was exiled to Ethiopia for failing to materialize practical facts to return and lived a decade before he returned to Somaliland on 10 February 2001 and he died on 8 November 2003.
However, some sources say that Abdiraxmaan Axmed Ali Tuur died a year later after his presidency. Other sources say that he is not the first president of Somaliland.
The sources also did not differentiate between Somalia and Somaliland. One of these sources says in 2003, Dahir Riyale Kahin became the first elected president of Somaliland.
