What Did You Know About TPLF?
When the TPLF - founded on February 1975 in Dedebit in Tigray it was inspired by the history of its region to fight the Ethiopian domination of the Amhara and regain the Tigris strength they have lost to them through history of operation.
When the front won the battle in close cooperation with the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) in 1991 and the two fronts liberated Eritrea and entered Ethiopia, the Tigray People's Liberation Front formed and dominated the coalition of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) from 1991 until 2018.
The coalition consisted and included the Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (EPDM), the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (SEPDM) and then later the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP).
But, Ethiopia always proves to be difficult with distrust caused by ethnical and regional interests of domination.
However, with the Eritrean support, the EPLF continued in power until the break of the second Ethiopian-Eritrean war in 1996 over a border dispute on Badme, which has resulted in the death of ten thousands of people.
But, the fact was that the conflict had never been a border-dispute, but an economical one when Eritrea changed its currency from the Birr to Nakfa. In addition, the leading Tigris had historical claims going back to colonial treaties.
Before these conditions, Ethiopia had good access to The Red Sea, where all Ethiopian imports passed along to it taxes offices in Tigray. When the conflict started, Ethiopia lost the access to the Red Sea,
Personal Connection with the Ethiopian TPLF & the Eritrean PDJF
Before the conflict and after the independence of Eritrea, I was working in the Eritrean official newspaper. Impressed by the cooperation between Eritrea and Ethiopia and hopeful that cooperation might improve the Sudanese Opposition and motivate it to conquer the military religious regime, brought through a coup to power by the National Islamic Front, I wrote a series of newspaper articles celebrating it and focusing on its goals and prospects.
When the second war started between Ethiopia an Eritrea, I was upset to no limit. I was working at that time in the central office of the PFDJ editing its "Hidry" magazine. I with my colleagues saw the first Ethiopian planes while they were hitting Asmara airport. I was mad as hell.
