Rewriting History: The Lies We Inherit!

"Rewriting History: The Lies We Inherit" challenges the many distortions within conventional narratives. My first intuitive encounter with these falsehoods came in elementary school and resurfaced in secondary school. I remember confronting what was written in our history textbooks, questioning its validity, and attempting to persuade one of my teachers with my argument. Rather than engaging with my reasoning, he gave me a nickname: "The Sophist"... a label I received at the age of 11, marking the beginning of my lifelong challenge against constructed truths.

After years of teaching history, I found myself returning to the same intuition... how history has been manipulated to serve conflicting ideological narratives, politically oriented to reinforce the agendas of ruling systems through their educational frameworks. This realization has shaped my perspective and driven me to continue exploring this personal narrative through invaluable research.

I will pursue my intuition that began in childhood, rooted in elementary school, strengthened in high secondary school, deepened through teaching, and later expanded into journalism. Throughout this research, I seek to reflect how this intuition continues to shape a world of truth before me, constantly enhanced by the outcomes of my work.

Before diving deeper, it is essential to highlight that this specific topic emerged while I was researching history from the pre-Cold War Era, which coincided with the Colonial Era, through the Cold War Era, and into the post-Cold War Era, which aligns with the Era of the New World Order. This research has led to the publication of more than 15 articles, including this one.

The following intertwined pages reflect the commonalities among these eras and the Conventional Narratives that have defined them:

What Are Conventional Narratives and Why Do They Matter?

Conventional narratives are widely accepted stories or explanations about historical events, political ideologies, societal structures, or cultural norms. They are often shaped by dominant institutions, governments, media, education systems, and even religious or corporate entities. These narratives help people make sense of the world, but they also carry implicit biases, oversimplifications, and sometimes outright distortions.

Why Do They Matter?

  1. Shaping Collective Memory: Conventional narratives define how societies remember history. They can either preserve truth or perpetuate myths, influencing generations.
  2. Influencing Political and Social Order: Governments and institutions use narratives to maintain power, justify policies, and unify or divide people.
  3. Controlling Public Perception: The media plays a huge role in reinforcing or challenging narratives. What we see, read, and hear molds our beliefs.
  4. Impacting Education: What students learn in school about history and politics shapes their worldview, sometimes without them realizing the presence of manipulation.

The real question is: Who gets to decide what the “official” story is? And how often do these narratives serve those in power rather than the truth itself?

Elaborating Why Do They Matter!

Let’s deepen our exploration of why conventional narratives matter and how they shape our world.

Why Do Conventional Narratives Matter?

Conventional narratives are more than just stories—they influence the way societies function, how individuals perceive reality, and even the decisions governments make. Their impact can be seen in four crucial areas:

  1. The Power of Collective Memory: Conventional narratives shape the way history is remembered. They establish what is considered "common knowledge" and define cultural identity. However, this can lead to selective storytelling, where inconvenient truths are omitted, and certain perspectives are favored. For example, historical events are often rewritten to glorify a nation or hide uncomfortable realities.
  2. Political and Social Control: Governments and institutions use conventional narratives as tools for social cohesion or manipulation. By controlling what people believe about history, conflicts, and ideologies, those in power can maintain authority. Narratives can justify wars, reinforce nationalism, or suppress dissent. Those who challenge the official story are often marginalized or discredited.
  3. The Influence of Media and Education: The media plays a huge role in shaping public perception. News outlets, entertainment, and academic institutions reinforce certain narratives while dismissing others as "conspiracy" or "fringe theories." The education system, too, often presents history and politics in ways that fit the dominant ideology, leading students to accept information without questioning its accuracy.
  4. Personal and Generational Impact: Beyond the societal level, conventional narratives affect individuals. People grow up believing what they are taught, forming opinions based on ingrained stories. These narratives shape identity, beliefs, and behavior—sometimes keeping people trapped in outdated or misleading worldviews. When someone breaks free and questions established truths, it can be revolutionary, but also isolating.

Can Conventional Narratives Ever Be True?

While they often contain elements of truth, conventional narratives tend to be simplified, biased, or manipulated to serve an agenda. This doesn't mean that *everything* accepted by society is false... it simply means that truth requires continuous questioning, analysis, and openness to alternative perspectives.

Influencing Political and Social Order!

Conventional narratives play a powerful role in shaping political landscapes and structuring social hierarchies. They are often used to justify government policies, maintain authority, and influence how citizens perceive their leaders, laws, and societal norms. Here’s how:

  • Legitimizing Authority & Policy: Governments frequently craft narratives to solidify their rule. By presenting certain ideologies or historical accounts as “absolute truths,” they reinforce their legitimacy. For instance, narratives about national identity, patriotism, or historical achievements are often designed to instill loyalty and obedience.

Example: Many authoritarian regimes frame history in a way that glorifies their leadership, emphasizing stability while minimizing dissent or past failures.

  • Justifying Wars & Conflicts: Wars are rarely fought without a strong supporting narrative. Governments and media often shape public opinion to create justifications for military interventions. By controlling the story, they influence whether a war is perceived as necessary, defensive, or aggressive.

Example: The portrayal of enemy nations in propaganda helps rally citizens around a cause. Narratives can paint a conflict as a fight for “freedom” or “security” while suppressing opposing viewpoints.

  • Maintaining Social Divisions:
  • Conventional narratives reinforce class structures, racial biases, and gender roles, often making inequalities seem natural or justified. These ideas are woven into education, religion, and media, influencing how societies function.

Example: Historical narratives often downplay the struggles of marginalized communities, leading to systemic discrimination. Political systems may perpetuate economic inequality by framing it as the result of individual effort rather than structural issues.

  • Controlling Public Dissent: By shaping what people believe to be "acceptable" discourse, governments and institutions suppress alternative perspectives. Critics or whistleblowers challenging the dominant narrative often face ridicule, censorship, or legal consequences.

Example: Media blackouts, misinformation campaigns, and social stigmatization are used to silence opposition. Those who question official versions of events may be labeled as conspiracists or threats to stability.

Can Narratives Be Reclaimed?

Yes... people challenge dominant narratives through independent journalism, activism, literature, and academic research. Social movements and historical revisions constantly reshape how we understand the past and present.

Controlling Public Perception!

Public perception is a powerful force that shapes opinions, influences decisions, and even determines the course of history. Governments, media, corporations, and influential figures all engage in perception management to guide how people interpret events, policies, and societal norms. Here’s how it works:

  • The Role of Mass Media: Mass media—news outlets, television, social media—plays a crucial role in shaping what people believe. By controlling the flow of information, media organizations can highlight certain narratives while suppressing others. This selective storytelling influences public opinion and can create widespread acceptance of particular viewpoints.

Example: News coverage can frame protests as either legitimate expressions of democracy or dangerous uprisings, depending on the agenda being pushed.

  • The Power of Propaganda: Propaganda is a deliberate effort to shape public perception through emotionally charged messaging, repetition, and selective facts. Governments and political groups use propaganda to maintain control, justify actions, and rally support.

Example: Historical propaganda campaigns have convinced populations to support wars, political ideologies, or economic policies that may not have been in their best interest.

  • Social Media Manipulation: With the rise of digital platforms, controlling perception has become more sophisticated. Political actors, corporations, and interest groups use social media to spread misinformation, amplify certain narratives, and even employ bots to create artificial consensus.

Example: Studies show that organized social media manipulation campaigns exist in over 80 countries, influencing elections and public discourse.

  • Psychological Conditioning: Repeated exposure to certain narratives conditions people to accept them as truth. This is why misinformation, even when debunked, can still linger in public consciousness. The more people hear a particular message, the more likely they are to believe it.

Example: Studies on propaganda reveal that media can shape what people think about—not necessarily their opinions, but the topics they focus on.

Can Public Perception Be Freed?

Yes, but it requires critical thinking, independent research, and a willingness to question dominant narratives. Alternative media, investigative journalism, and grassroots movements play a crucial role in challenging perception control.

Guys, Study History for Exams, After that Throw It to Garbage Where It Belongs!

While teaching many years ago, I encountered one of the most difficult circumstances of my life... one that threatened my stability, uprooted me, and marked me for surveillance. Not because I failed in my role as a teacher, but precisely because I succeeded too well.

I was transferred from city to city, my presence disrupted... not to correct any wrongdoing but to shake the foundation of my thoughts, to strip me of my intellectual autonomy. They believed that by moving me like a chess piece across unfamiliar landscapes, I would lose my ability to think clearly, to question, to challenge. But what they never realized was this: in scattering me, they let the sun shine in places it had never reached before.

When I finished the subject matter in my lessons, I had a habit... one final act of defiance. In the last ten minutes, I made sure my students had truly grasped the material. But in the last two minutes, I told them something they weren’t expecting: Do this only for the exam. After that? The better thing to do... throw it all away.

What they had been taught was not truth. It was institutional conditioning. And that is where The Illusions of Institutional Narratives begin.
