Protesters in London Demand the Closure of Guantanamo!

Dear reader,

2012 marks the concluding year of our project on Forensic Evidence Against Torture, whose objective was to fight impunity by focusing on medical examination and forensic evidence that can be used in the prosecution of alleged torture cases.

Impunity is still one of the most serious impediments to the prevention of torture. Perpetrators are seldom brought to court; and torture survivors rarely receive any kind of redress. In a climate of impunity, perpetrators of torture can continue their crimes without risking arrest, prosecution or punishment.

Besides adding to the suffering of the victims, such situations leads to a general lack of trust in justice and the rule of law. Consequently, few complaints are brought forward and few actual prosecutions are made.

Most recently, this project aided in forensic examination of five Iraqi victims of torture that have taken their case to the Danish government. Next month, medical forensic and legal experts will gather with other international stakeholders in Washington, D.C. for a concluding conference on the project and the way forward.

We look forward to sharing the news of the conference and its results with you in February. Read more about the project at IRCT.ORG linked below.

Furthermore, the start of 2012 also marked a shameful anniversary – 10 years in which the United States has detained and tortured in the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Read more about our public statement and call for the closure
of the detention facility in this month’s newsletter.

And to all our friends and supporters, we would like to wish you a wonderful new year. Thank you for your continued support. Help IRCT help rehabilitating victims of torture at IRCT Org.
