Arab - Muslim: Untangling Faith Identity!

The first feeling when reading "Arab - Muslim: Untangling Faith Identity"... get it away, so you understand exactly what happens because of this conflation of two different terms... the first is ethnic and the second is religious and they are both used to reflect that they are one, or well-integrated, which is not. This is a logical analysing.

Archive of Truth in Exile: From Sudan's Erasure to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Africa's Vulnerable States

This discussion has been started at Arab ≠ Muslim: Untangling Faith Identity 1. It doesn't antagonise, it reflects on facts and that is all I am concerned about and getting through it in real stories of erasure.

It is a result of more than 60+ years of experiences through which I have conducted many interviews in this cultural and political matter, from Beirut 75, thanks to Ghada al-Samman to the recent evolution of destruction. .

What troubles me most is how the conflation of “Arab” and “Muslim” has been weaponized... two distinct identities collapsed into one, producing fractures, conspiracies, and deliberate destabilization across entire regions.

Sudan, which pains me deeply, stands as a witness: once the largest country in Africa, now fragmented under the weight of Arabization and Islamisation policies.

The imposition of a singular identity erased plural histories, fueling decades of civil war and ultimately leading to secession. The scars of this fragmentation remain visible today, as Sudan continues to struggle with instability and displacement.

Lebanon, too, bears the marks of this imposed confusion. Its fragile mosaic of communities was destabilized by the reduction of complex cultural and religious pluralism into rigid categories. Arabization and Islamisation policies deepened sectarian divides, and external powers manipulated the conflation of Arab and Muslim identities to inflame tensions.

The civil war of 1975–1990 was not only about local grievances but also about how identity itself was turned into a weapon. Lebanon's ongoing crises: political paralysis, and economic collapse are still haunted by this legacy.

Yemen's war flows partly from the Arab–Muslim conflation but also diverges in its trajectory. Here, identity has been entangled with tribal affiliations, regional inequalities, and geopolitical rivalries. Yet the conflation has nonetheless been used to justify interventions and proxy conflicts, turning Yemen into a battlefield where identity is manipulated for strategic ends.

Iraq offers another painful example. The Arab–Muslim conflation was exploited to pit Sunni and Shia communities against each other, especially after the 2003 invasion. The reduction of diverse Iraqi identities into simplistic sectarian categories fueled cycles of violence and displacement. External powers amplified these divisions, weaponizing identity to destabilize the state and the wider region.

Syria's civil war revealed how identity could be mobilized to erase minority communities and justify authoritarian control. Both the regime and its opponents manipulated Arab and Muslim categories to claim legitimacy, while ordinary Syrians bore the brunt of displacement and destruction. The conflation became a tool of war, obscuring the plural histories of Syria's people.

Across these states, the pattern is clear: the conflation of Arab and Muslim identities has been repeatedly weaponized to divide, destabilize, and erase. Faith is not ethnicity, and identity is not a weapon.

Yet history shows how this confusion has been deliberately imposed, reshaping entire regions through fragmentation and conflict. It is time to lay this out clearly, to untangle faith from ethnicity, and to reclaim the plural inheritance that has been obscured.

The Gulf War marked a turning point for Iraq, but even before the invasion, identity had already been manipulated as a weapon.

The dilemma of al-Ba'ath party

The Ba'ath Party, which once claimed to embody unity, fractured across Iraq and Syria. Its slogan "One Arabic Nation with an Immortal Message" was presented as a vision of strength, yet in practice it erased plural identities and silenced communities that did not fit the imposed mold.

How could a party that had already fragmented into two assume unity for any country?

The contradiction was glaring: a fractured party preaching wholeness, while its policies deepened divisions and erased difference.

In both Iraq and Syria, this slogan became a cover for authoritarian control, masking erasure under the language of unity. The conflation of Arab and Muslim identities was not only a geopolitical tool but also an ideological one, inscribed into mottos and party platforms.

What was proclaimed as "immortal" unity was, in reality, a machinery of exclusion and death.

To untangle Arab from Muslim is not a matter of semantics, it is an act of witness. It is a refusal to let imposed identities erase plural histories or justify fragmentation. My archive insists that faith is not ethnicity, and belonging is not a weapon.

Each testimony, whether from Sudan, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, or Syria, is a fragment of a larger correction: a call to resist the flattening of identities and to reclaim the inheritance of plurality. In exile, truth must be spoken clearly, rhythmically, and without concession, because only through clarity can we begin to heal the fractures that have been deliberately sown.

***** Religions have nothing to do with politics as a secular concept, despite historical connection. Politics is a science. Religion is a spiritual belief and a faith. It is better for it to work in the society and not in the states levels. The state is a secular concept and thus should be in reality.

Thanks to Substack, this provides a wider scope to reach interested readers on facts and truths to everything that they believe hidden behind the scene, in the time of conspiracies, corruption, manipulation, laws fostering police states even in what they call the first world and... It raises a question: Why should people flee their lands thinking that there is a paradise in Europe?

My advice, take every pass to librate your lands. It is better than chasing illusion. Why am I here? The UNHCR sent me here many years ago, before the collapse. Take actions from the Action Guide.

Ink Between Borders - Exile by Principles: Peace Unheard! And what... after sending me here? I resist, I create groups to fight dictatorship of a military religious regime like the one the National Islamic Front has created through their coup that brought the international criminal Omer al-Bashir to power and I continue fight his remnants in what was called the military council and now what is called sovereignty council and their Janjaweed.

The Revolution I Would Not Sell! A Memoir of Principle, Politics, and the Pen! This was the longest revolution in Africa to reclaim the independence of Eritrea that should have been happened during the 1940s. I was there when the Eritrean People's Libration Front was formed.

A Manifesto for the Rebirth of the Sudanese Real Identity! It comes from long political experiences witnessing the deterioration of this land since its Independence Day. Through my experiences I can see very well that the Sudanese have never developed a good understanding to their problems and never understood the identity of the country. The manifesto offers a new way to understand and resist the fracture.

Yes of course, the "Arab - Muslim: Untangling Faith Identity" is not far from word's geopolitics. Yemen is the recent example. Before this, Afghanistan was an example, through which international terrorism has been created, invested and exported. However, other faiths are amalgamated with politics too to lead this world to more difficult situation. So the Peace Day we celebrate every year has no meaning in today's complex of faith and national strength. This amalgamated faith and national strength were history. Don't repeat it again.
