Why Somaliland Denies Refugees Rights?
In the World Refugee Day, 20 June this year, Ethiopia said to be host of 150,000 refugees from the neighbouring countries, while the self-declared independent state of Somaliland said to have no refugees, but only economic migrants.
The officials in Ethiopia added that they opened two additional camps for Somali and Eritrean refugees this year, while the officials in Somaliland made refugees angry and upset them by such claim.
Facts are that, the UNHCR has recognized 1,600 refugees in addition to almost 20,000 asylum seekers and 67,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country.
Great numbers of those people are Amhara and Oromos from Ethiopia, some Eritreans and few from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
While those African political refugees have no any protection there, Somaliland wants to build and keep good relations with neighbouring countries especially those recognized the new country, as it wants to get more recognition.
However, that should not be an interest to block some refugees, limit their access to human rights, and threat them to keep quite or sell them by sending them back.
Did you know why Somaliland denies refugees their rights to refuge status in the country?
