Actually Not Strange, Now the EU Changes Mind!
by: Selamawi

At this moment, it may seem very strange to see the EU so much worried about the closure of the refugee agency in Libya, not from the humanitarian perspective but from the business view.

The existence of the UNHCR in Libya is very important to shelter refugees from the pushback policy of Silvio Berlusconi.

Now, he remains naked and he will either continue to dump the immigrants to Libya regardless of what will happen to them or pressurize Libya to be part of the 1951 Convention. His failure to fulfil his immigration policy hormonally will be good reason to loss power in the coming era.

Whether for humanitarian purpose or their own business revenues, all the risked once including my self are hoping for the EU to do its best to resume the UNHCR in Libya and allow its little activity to continue! It is more strange and inhuman business around the frontiers of the EU in the third millennium!

Resume the Operations of the UNHCR in Tripoli!
by: Selamawi

Now, every body understands the business underlying on the grounds. Many of the EU countries are not looking at it from humanitarian view, but are seeking for ways to keep their interests.

Combating the influx of immigrants to Europe is on one hand, yet they want also to safeguard their business relations with Libya.

Thus, when EU pressurizes its trade partner Libya to sign Geneva Convention 1951 and allow the UN Refugee Agency to resume its work, it is not because they are in sympathy with the asylum and refugees, but they are looking for their profits.

In the absence of the UNHCR, the EU in general and Italy in particular cannot deceive their people about the efficiency of the pushback policy. This relation between Tripoli and Rome dumped thousands of immigrants to Libyan detentions, many of which are already refugees and many more are asylum seekers.

Yet, whatever the reason, the refugees and the potential refugees in Libya are happy that the EU is trying to pressurize Libya. This can trigger Libya to obey the international / regional protocols and insure the safety of refugees, give them protection and stop threatening them of deportation to a place to risk their life.

May be $Bs Revenues from the Libyan Oil!
by: Asmerom

As the article says, it will cost hard currencies to ensure the economical flow of the European revenues from the Libyan oil.

The issue of immigrants in Libya is not a matter of immigrants and refugees, but a matter of European business and benefit. Combating the influx of immigrants heading to Europe is worse and it has humanitarian costs.

That is a good reason for the existence of the UN Refugees Agency in Libya.

However, resuming the humanitarian activities of the Refugees Agency will cost more money to some extent. Thus, it costs more to retain the EU revenues from Libya!
