Kulmiye Leads Somaliland!

by Mohamud Ali
(London, UK)

Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud Siilaanyo - Kulmiye, Somaliland

Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud Siilaanyo - Kulmiye, Somaliland

Somaliland held its second presidential elections on the 26 June 2010!

The outgoing president of Somaliland Mr Dahir Riyaale Kaahin was elected in 2003, in the first ever presidential election when the people of Somaliland cast their vote to exercise their democratic rights to choose their leader.

Since then elections were delayed for three years, which at times put the political parties at loggerhead with each other. The much awaited election took place on the 26 June 2010, a historical day for Somaliland as it is synchronised with the day Somaliland took independence from the British colonial power 50 years ago.

The opposition party, Peace, Unity and Development Party (Kulmiye) won the election with a clear majority of 50% of the total votes cast. The defeated political parties of United People’s Democratic Party (UDUB) and Justice and Welfare Party (UCID) both conceded defeated and congratulated the winner, Mr Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud Siilaanyo.

All three parties addressed the nation and commended the national for their commitment to peace and stability in this part of Somalia that is thriving without the political recognition that they deserve.
