15 Eritreans Detained in Libya are about to be Deported!
A petition letter to stop the threat of deportation ...
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing this petition on behalf of 15 Eritrean asylum seekers detained in Surman detaining center some 80 km west of Tripoli. They are crying out loudly and the entire situation seems a trick to deport them back to Eritrea.
They spent more than three months in the detaining center without any hope and are with colleagues of other nationalities. There are some signs of deportations these days, which all of them afraid of. The officials asked them to fill forms, take photos and take fingerprints before freely exempted.
This never ever happened before and is unbelievable. They planned this process simply to trick the detainees, because telling the immigrants that they decide to deport them will alert the international community to interfere and stop the deportation.
There are 15 Eritreans in this process aged from 20 to 50 years and they are all males. All of them claim that they are in danger if deported back to Eritrea. They all said that they do have political problems in Eritrea and in Libya too, since they are treating them this way.
All of those miserable Eritrean political refugees are in urgent need of international protection. They need also by all human means, urgent access to apply for asylums with the procedures of the UNHCR residing in Tripoli to resettle in more civilized and modern countries.
The authority told them they would exempt them within August. However, many of them afraid that the end of August can be the secret day of their deportation back to Eritrea; a place all of them claim it is dangerous for their life.
They send us their full names (it should not be posted in any media for security reasons) but we will send the list as soon as all the humanitarian organizations intervene before the end of August 2009.
Everybody knows the UNHCR alone cannot carry the burden, because Libya is not in with the territory the UNHCR covers and Libya is not included in the 1951 Geneva conventions concerning the rights of refugees. Thus all international organizations should cooperate with the UNHCR in saving these asylum seekers form being deported back to a country all of them claim it is dangerous for them.
Thus, I send this appeal on behalf 15 Eritreans detained in Libya and I hope all international humanitarian organizations will intervene and stop the secret deportation’s plan.
